    Also known as Mahajanga, Majunga is a port city in the northwest of Madagascar. Nestled near the Mozambique Canal, it lies at the mouthpiece of the Betsiboka River. The city is very extended, and you can find your way there thanks to the numerous baobabs that serve as landmarks in the layout of streets and districts.
    A transshipment port, Mahajanga is linked by road with Antsiranana and with the national capital, Antananarivo, about 225 miles (360 km) south-southeast. An airport is nearby. Mahajanga’s industries include the processing of agricultural products, meat canning, and the manufacture of soap, sugar, and cement.
    Mahajanga is on the Betsiboka River, which then leads to Bombetoka Bay . The city has a sizable Muslim population. In 1977, it was the scene of ethnic unrest, forcing the evacuation of the Comorian minority living there. Mahajanga is also the seat of a Roman Catholic Diocese (Cathedral of the Holy Heart of Mary).
