Gaelic football is a form of football played on a rectangular grass pitch between two teams of 15 players. The objective of the sport is to score points by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar 2.5 metres (8 ft 2 in) above the ground (1 point).
According to Father W. Ferris, there are two types of Gaelic football: the "field game", where the objective is to put the ball through arch-like goals, formed from the boughs of two trees, and; the "epic cross-country game", which lasted the whole of a Sunday (after mass) and was won by taking the ball across a parish boundary.
