  1. The American mink is found throughout much of the UK, including some of the Western Isles of Scotland. It was not farmed in Ireland until the 1950s, so although feral mink established themselves there later than on the mainland, they are now much more widespread than the limited Irish records visible on the map suggest.

The American mink ( Neogale vison) is a semiaquatic species of mustelid native to North America, though human introduction has expanded its range to many parts of Europe, Asia, and South America. Because of range expansion, the American mink is classed as a least-concern species by the IUCN.
The mink we have in Britain are not native here. They are American mink ( Neovison vison ), which originated from mink brought here for fur-farming. In continental Europe, there is also a European mink ( Mustela lutreola ), a somewhat different species and now endangered. The European mink has apparently never existed in the British Isles.
Origin & Distribution: Mink are found throughout Great Britain and Ireland. They are an invasive non-native species, originally brought to fur farms from North America and subsequently escaping or being misguidedly released. Mink are essentially amphibious, and are typically found along rivers and coastal areas.
American mink first arrived in Britain in 1929, but only in commercial fur farms. They were first reported to be breeding wild in the UK in 1956, as a result of escapees and deliberate releases. Today it is virtually impossible to estimate the number of mink living in our waterways.
