Schaan (German pronunciation: [ʃaːn]) is the largest municipality of Liechtenstein by population. It is located to the north of Vaduz, the capital, in the central part of the country.

The official languages are German, with an alemannic dialect spoken in the country, and English. There are also three non-official languages: French, Italian and Romansh. The population of Liechtenstein is just over 37,000. The capital city is Vaduz, and other largest cities include Schaan, Triesen and Balzers.

Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres (62 square miles) and a population of 39,790. It is the world's smallest country to border two countries.

The principality of Liechtenstein is divided into eleven municipalities (German: Gemeinden, singular Gemeinde), most consisting of only a single town. Five of the Gemeinden fall within the electoral district of Unterland (lower country), while the other six are within the Oberland (upper country).
