Sheet metal is metal that is formed into thin, flat pieces. Sheet metal is generally produced in sheets less than 6 mm. It is one of the fundamental forms used in metalworking and can be cut and bent into a variety of different shapes. Thicknesses can vary significantly.

Both low carbon steel and high carbon steel are the cheapest options out of these metals, cheaper than aluminum. Low carbon steel is very easy to make, due to the carbon levels being lower. This kind of steel is very easy to weld with and shows both great durability levels along with good heat transfer levels.

The difference between a metal sheet and metal plate can be defined by thickness. If the thickness of the metal is ¼” (6mm) or more, then it is considered a plate. Plate thickness is typically measured in inches. If the thickness is less than ¼” (6mm), it is considered sheet.

There are many different metals that can be made into sheet metal, such as aluminium, brass, copper, steel, tin, nickel and titanium. For decorative uses, some important sheet metals include silver, gold, and platinum (platinum sheet metal is also utilized as a catalyst).
