Judit Polgar, Hungarian chess player, the youngest of three chess-playing sisters. She earned the (men’s) International Master (IM) chess title at age 12 and set a new record (since beaten) by becoming the youngest (men’s) International Grandmaster (GM) in history at age 15 years 4 months, eclipsing Bobby Fischer.
Polgar’s life was never going to be ordinary. Few athletes have grown up as part of a revolutionary educational experiment, one which is still discussed by psychologists today as part of the nature-vs-nurture debate.
Polgar was denied a deferment for her pregnancy and lost the title when she refused to comply with match conditions. Polgar returned to active chess play in 2003, and she played first board for the United States women’s team at the 2004 FIDE Chess Olympiad, held in Calvià, Majorca, Spain.
By her twelfth birthday, Polgár was the world’s top-ranked female. The Hungarian chess star achieved the title of grandmaster – the highest title a player can attain – by the age of 15, becoming the youngest person at the time to do so. No wonder Polgár is regarded as the real Beth Harmon.
