  1. The Irish Sea experiences a moderate current with Peak Spring Tidal Currents between 1-2m/s. Local bathymetry influences the current strengths. The tidal currents are generally low along the west and south coasts.

The density currents form a north-going flow of water through the Irish Sea which bifurcates around the Isle of Man, most of it passing to the west of the Isle. Southerly-type winds also maintain a northwards flow through the Sea, most of this passing to the east of the Isle.

Until recent years, most of our knowledge of currents in the Irish Sea was indirect and based on the distribution of temperature and salinity. The deduction from the distribution of mean salinity that the main flow through the Irish Sea was northwards, from the southern entrance to the North Channel, has been mentioned above.
During the breakdown period, it is expected that the density-driven circulation will cease and the flow would revert to a primarily wind-driven situation. Whilst the ‘Irish Coastal Current’ had previously gone unnoticed, its existence fits with recent descriptions of circulation in the Celtic Sea and to the west of Scotland.
The currents and circulation patterns of the sea are described, as they are known both from direct observations and by deductions from the distribution of physical and other properties. The dynamics of the circulation and its effects on mixing and dispersion of materials introduced into the sea are discussed.
