It was a warm day, and most were on the road to the summer holidays. On August 1 1980, radios announced the sad news of the death of Patrick Depailler.
    Looking back at the life of the French F1 pilot who paid the ultimate sacrifice driving an Alfa Romeo, on the old Hockeinheim racetrack prior to the German Grand Prix of 1980. Patrick Depailler was born on August 1st of 1944 in Clermond-Ferrand, Central France in a relatively well-off family.
    In his day, there were many who suggested that Patrick Depailler lacked application. His critics claimed he risked too much off the track and destroyed what could have been his best season, 1979, by breaking his legs in a hang-gliding accident. But he won races, and could have won more but for his fatal crash in 1980.
    Depailler was helping to advance this team up the grid when he was killed in a crash at Hockenheim on 1 August 1980, during a private testing session. He was 35 years old at the time. He won two races, secured one pole position, achieved 19 podiums, and scored a total of 141 championship points.
