    The Corte-Real family (also Côrte-Real and Corte Real) is a Portuguese noble family dating back to 14th century, originating in Tavira. The family is famous for its involvement in the Portuguese discoveries during the Age of Exploration, in the 16th century.
    The Corte Reál brothers were members of a noble Portuguese family. Gaspar was apparently the more aggressive of the two. In 1499 he learned of a grant from King Manoel I to a fellow Portuguese, John Fernandes, to undertake an expedition into the North Atlantic.
    Gaspar Corte Real (gษ™shpär´ kôr´tษ™ rฤ•äl´), c.1450โ€“1501?, Portuguese explorer. Sent by King Manuel I to search for the Northwest Passage, he is said to have discovered Greenland in 1500 and may have touched on the North American coast. He made a second voyage with his brother Miguel in 1501.
    The 1st marquess married Margarita Corte Real, an heiress who brought him the titles and wealth of the Corte Real family, including governorship of some of the Azores. As a result of this union the two family names were combined to become Moura e Corte Real .
