Big Trout Lake is a fly-in community, accessible by air, and winter road in the colder months. The population of Big Trout Lake was 1,322 residents in January 2007, making it one of the largest First Nations communities in the region. The current band chief is Donny Morris and deputy chief is Darryl Sainnawap.

Big Trout Lake Loop is a multi-day route intended for experienced paddlers. The loop begins and ends at Canoe Lake Access Point by the Portage Store. Here you can purchase backcountry permits, maps, and equipment rentals, as well as gather local knowledge before your journey. Backcountry camping reservations can be made online or by phone.
