Kranj was the first capital of the Slovenes, since from the 8th century onwards it was the centre of the Slavic principality of Carniola. The Lombard chronicler Paulus Diaconus described it with the words “Carniola, patria Sclavorum” (Carniola, the homeland of the Slavs).
