Part of the Judiciary Act of 1789, the ATS allows non-U.S. citizens to seek damages in U.S. courts for torts committed in violation of international law. In recent years, plaintiff's attorneys have begun to invoke the statute as a means for asserting human rights claims against U.S. corporations in U.S. federal courts.
