WebAbout. History. Written by Barry Emery. The area named New Providence was settled in the late 1760s. Most of the original inhabitants were Baptists who had moved from Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. They were farmers and the land was similar to its namesake, Cheshire in England.

WebGeography. Cheshire is located within the valley of the Hoosic River, and is the site of a dammed reservoir on the river. To the west, parts of Mount Greylock State Reservation take up sections of town, and includes a section of the auto road. To the southeast, North Mountain peaks just outside town limits before descending to the valley.

In 1801 the good people of this place sent a cheese to Mr. Jefferson, weighing about 1200 pounds. The value of wool, the growth of 1836, sold for $5,522. The Hoosack river passes through the town.
