Carcross Desert The dunes are enjoyed by both locals and visitors, who hike up them, sandboard down them, and explore them on ATVs. Plus, they're home to a variety of rare plants and insects.

Carcross is mainly known for its world class mountain biking on the near-by Montana Mountain, and for the nearby Carcross Desert, often referred to as the "world's smallest desert."

Carcross Desert is commonly referred to as a desert, but is actually a series of northern sand dunes. The area's climate is too humid to be considered a true desert. The sand was formed during the last glacial period, when large glacial lakes formed and deposited silt.

Visitors may spot animals like black bears, moose, deer and caribou. In fact, the village of Carcross was originally named Caribou Crossing for the herds of caribou that migrated through the area. Look closer and you might see some of the numerous smaller mammals like chipmunks, squirrels and snowshoe hares.
