    Biskra is located in northeastern Algeria, about 248 miles (399 km) from Algiers, 71 miles (114 km) southwest of Batna and 137 miles (220 km) north of Touggourt. It is nicknamed "The Queen of the Zibans", "The Door of the Desert" or "The Saharan Nice" because of its location at the beginning of the Sahara Desert.

    Geographically, Biskra Province is arid, but oases and rivers can be found, such as the Djedi River which flows through the province. The mountainous Aurès region also extends into the province. Biskra Province is home to the district of Tolga, which is well-known internationally for its high-quality Deglet Nour dates.
    In the 1100s it was the semi-autonomous capital of the Zab region but later came under the influence of the Ḥafṣids. The Turks occupied Biskra in 1552. It was garrisoned by the French in 1844. Fort Saint-Germain (1849–51; built on the site of the former Turkish Casbah) became the nucleus of modern Biskra.
