History of Mashhad. In earlier times Mashhad had been a village called Sanābād (also called Nūqān). It was long overshadowed by the pre-Islamic city of Ṭūs. Both the ʿAbbāsid caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd (ruled 786–809) and the eighth imam of Shiʿi Islam, ʿAlī al-Riḍā (died 818) were buried in Sanābād.
Mashhad is the second-most-populous city in Iran, located in the relatively remote north-east of the country about 900 kilometres (560 miles) from Tehran.
