Port of Spain was originally an American Indian village. The Spanish took control of the island of Trinidad in the 1500s, and in 1784 they made Port of Spain the capital of Trinidad. Great Britain took over Trinidad in the late 1700s. A large fire damaged Port of Spain in the early 1800s, but it was rebuilt.
