WEBTuscaloosa, the county seat of Tuscaloosa County, is located in west central Alabama, on the Black Warrior River. The city is named for the Choctaw chief Tascaluza, or Tuskalusa, who was defeated by Hernando de Soto in 1540 in the Battle of Mauvila. A granite memorial to him stands on the courthouse lawn.
