    Turrialba is a district of the Turrialba canton, in the Cartago province of Costa Rica. Turrialba has an area of 56.1 km² and an elevation of 646 metres. Pop. For the 2011 census, Turrialba had a population of 26,680 inhabitants. The main industries are textiles, agriculture and tourism.
    Hundreds of thousands of people visit Costa Rica every year to enjoy the country’s natural beauty and wildlife, but only a small fraction of them travel to Turrialba, a canton that is replete with both. Located due east of San José, Turrialba is just two hours from the airport yet feels like a different world entirely.
    The volcano is in the easternmost part of the Central Volcanic Range. Turrialba Volcano National Park is 70 kilometers (43 miles) from San Jose and about a 2.5 hour drive one way. Access to the national park will be from the Tapojo sector via Finca Monte Calas (Route 20)
    The volcano is named after its canton, Turrialba, in Costa Rica's Cartago Province. There is no clear consensus on the origin of the name Turrialba, but historians disagree with attempts to attribute the name to the patronym Torrealba (from Aragon in Spain) or from the Latin Turris alba (white tower).
