      Zeravshan Range, Tajikistan. Tajikistan, landlocked country lying in the heart of Central Asia. It is bordered by Kyrgyzstan on the north, China on the east, Afghanistan on the south, and Uzbekistan on the west and northwest. Tajikistan includes the Gorno-Badakhshan (“Mountain Badakhshan”) autonomous region, with its capital at Khorugh (Khorog).
      As observed on the physical map of Tajikistan above, almost the entire country (around 93%) is mountainous. In fact, more than half of the country is higher than 3,000 m, (9,842 ft.) in elevation. The map also shows the two most dominant mountain ranges in the country, the Alay Range in the north and the Pamir Mountains to the southeast.
      With an area of 142,600 km 2 (55,100 sq mi), Tajikistan has a maximum east-to-west extent of 700 km (430 mi), and a maximum north-to-south extent of 350 km (220 mi).
