    Loon Capital of the World! The Town of Mercer is located in the “lakes region” of southern Iron County, WI along US Hwy 51. It borders the counties of Vilas to the east and Ashland to the west.
    From the vast water wonderland of the 14,300 acre Turtle Flambeau Flowage to the far-reaching wilderness of the 74,500 acres of public forestland, Mercer offers authentic outdoor adventures that you will remember long after you’ve returned home.
    In 1894 the first train arrived in Mercer signaling the beginning of the early settlers, roads, mills, stores, and other businesses. Mercer was created as a district of the town of Vaughn in 1908 and established as a Town on the 26th of February 1909. The first town meeting was held in April of 1909.
    Mercer identifies itself as the " Loon Capital of the World" to promote tourism. A wildlife study found Mercer had the highest concentration of common loons in the world. In front of the Mercer Chamber of Commerce's information center, there is a 16-foot (4.9 m), 2,000-pound (910 kg) statue named "Claire de Loon".
