    Gangneung is located to the east of the Taebaek Mountains, which is the considered the 'waist' of the Korean peninsula. To the East is the East Sea, or the Sea of Japan, and to the west are the inner side of Hongcheon County, the Pyeongchang County 's Jinbu-myeon and the Daegwallyeong-myeon respectively.
