Dunhuang manuscripts refer to a wide variety of religious and secular documents (mostly manuscripts, but also including some woodblock-printed texts) in Chinese and other languages that were discovered at the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, China, during the 20th century.
The International Dunhuang Project (IDP) is an international collaborative effort to conserve, catalogue and digitise manuscripts, printed texts, paintings, textiles and artefacts from the Mogao caves at the Western Chinese city of Dunhuang and various other archaeological sites at the eastern end of the Silk Road.
The Dunhuang documents include works ranging from history and mathematics to folk songs and dance. There are also many religious documents, most of which are Buddhist, but other religions, including Daoism, Nestorian Christianity, Judaism, and Manichaeism, are also represented. The majority of the manuscripts are in Chinese.
Abundant historical materials can be found in Dunhuang manuscripts; some can complement the inadequacy of historical materials. Some can correct the mistakes in historical records, and some materials about the northwestern border are precious, which fill in the gap of historical study.
