    The Australian Brush-turkey is a large, ground-dwelling bird with black-brown plumage, a bald, red head and a yellow neck pouch (or wattle). The Australian Brush-turkey chicks hatch fully feathered and can fly within a few hours.

The subspecies A. l. purpureicollis from the northern Cape York Peninsula is smaller than the more widespread nominate subspecies.
    The Australian Brush-turkey's range extends along eastern Australia, from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, south to the northern suburbs of Sydney and the Illawarra region of New South Wales. Brush-turkeys feed on insects, seeds and fallen fruits, which are exposed by raking the leaf litter or breaking open rotten logs with their large feet.
    Despite its name and their superficial similarities, the bird is not closely related to American turkeys, nor to the Australian bustard, which is also known as the bush turkey. Its closest relatives are the Wattled brushturkey, Waigeo brushturkey, and malleefowl. The Australian brushturkey is a large bird with black feathers and a red head.
