Zamboanga City is in the Mindanao region of the Philippines. Known as the "City of Flowers" (the etymology of Zamboanga comes from the Malay word jambangan means garden of flowers), it is now one of the most important and busiest port cities in the Philippines.
Zamboanga City is called the "Sardines Capital of the Philippines". This is because 9 of the 12 sardine companies in the country are in the city. Other names for the city are "Asia's Latin City" and "City of Flowers". The city of Zamboanga is politically divided into 98 barangays or barrios. Many landmarks are in the city.
Its municipal board consisted of a mayor and two commissioners. On February 26, 1937, the City Charter of Zamboanga became effective and the new city government was inaugurated headed by a mayor appointed by the President of the Philippine Commonwealth .
The charter made Zamboanga City as the largest city in the world in terms of land area. During these times, Zamboanga was the leading commercial and industrial city of Mindanao. Before World War II, Pettit Barracks, a part of the U.S. Army's 43d Infantry Regiment (PS), was stationed there.
