  1. Tropical savanna climate or tropical wet and dry climate is a tropical climate sub-type that corresponds to the Köppen climate classification categories Aw (for a dry "winter") and As (for a dry "summer"). The driest month has less than 60 mm (2.4 in) of precipitation and also less than mm of precipitation. : 200–1

There are three basic types of tropical climates within the tropical climate group: tropical rainforest climate (Af), tropical monsoon climate (Am) and tropical wet and dry climate or tropical savannah (Aw for dry winters, and As for dry summers), which are classified and distinguished by the precipitation and the precipitation levels of the driest month in those regions.

The dry season is longer than in tropical monsoon and trade-wind littoral (Am) climates and becomes progressively longer as one moves poleward through the region. The tropical wet-dry climate is abbreviated Aw in the Köppen-Geiger-Pohl system.
Its position at about 15 o North or South latitude places the Tropical Wet/Dry climate in a zone between the alternating influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (wet season) and the (dry season) subtropical high. The subsidence of the subtropical high suppresses precipitation, creating clear skies allowing much insolation to the surface.
The U.S. state of Hawaii; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Belém, Brazil, are examples of areas with tropical wet climates. Tropical monsoon climates are most found in southern Asia and West Africa. A monsoon is a wind system that reverses its direction every six months.
Each lettered group is divided into subcategories. Some of these subcategories are forest (f), monsoon (m), and wet/dry (w) types, based on the amount of precipitation and season when that precipitation occurs. Tropical Moist (Group A) climates are found in a band about 15o to 25o N and S of the equator.
