    Sterling Heights is a city in Macomb County of the U.S. state of Michigan, and a suburb of Detroit. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 134,346. It is the second largest suburb in Metro Detroit, and the fourth largest city in Michigan .

    After the War of 1812, people began flocking North of Detroit and into rural farming communities. In 1835, this area was first incorporated as Jefferson Township. Then, in 1838, the name was changed to Sterling Township. It remained under this designation all the way until 1968 when Sterling Heights was incorporated as a city.
    According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sterling Heights has a total area of 36.72 square miles (95.10 km 2 ), of which 36.45 square miles (94.41 km 2) are land and 0.27 square miles (0.70 km 2 ), or 0.74%, are water. The Clinton River crosses the northeast part of the city, flowing east to Lake St. Clair east of Mount Clemens .
