The other part of Soweto, home to 1.3 million people and a quarter of the city of Johannesburg, is located separated from downtown by a string of old gold mine dumps that young people often mistake for mountains. It can be reached by climbing the 49 steps of Oppenheimer Tower for a panoramic view.
But the image of Soweto that the South African government tries to sell to the rest of the world, particularly the gentrification of Vilakazi Street, where I grew up after we moved from Chiawelo, tries too hard to hide the scars of its cruel apartheid history.
Though apartheid ended in 1994, its legacy has left Soweto as Africa’s most impoverished city. At the time of the student uprising in 1976, only 83% of houses had electricity, and 93% lacked running water. To this day roads remain unpaved, and many areas are still without electricity.
Soweto grew rapidly in World War II from 244,000 in 1939 to 395,231 people by 1945. This unparalleled growth rate was primarily due to the loosening of constraints on black South Africans in the employment sector, as most white men were engaged in overseas military activities.
