    It is a part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Neighbouring provinces are Bangkok, to the north and west, and Chachoengsao to the east. Samut Prakan was previously once home to a Dutch trading post who referred to the area as New Amsterdam. [citation needed]

    Samut Prakan is an ancient city that bears the heritage of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The royal monastery Wat Klang Worawihan was built during the late Ayutthaya period. This monastery was also known as Wat Takothong. Alongside typical Thai architecture, the temple is also decorated with Chinese ceramics.
    In Thai the word samut is from Sanskrit, samudra, meaning 'ocean' or 'sea', and the word prakan is from Sanskrit, prākāra, meaning 'fortress', 'walls', or 'stronghold'. Samut Prakan lies at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River on the Gulf of Thailand. Thus the province is also sometimes called Pak Nam (ปากน้ำ), Thai for 'mouth of river'.
