        Piteå is located at the mouth of the Pite River ( Swedish: Piteälven ), at the shore of the Bay of Bothnia. The central part is located on an islet called Häggholmen, which due to post-glacial rebound almost has become a part of the mainland; the land in northern Sweden rises at a rate of up to 9 mm (0.35 in) per year.

        Piteå was founded in 1620 and granted city rights in 1621, with the purpose of creating a trading center in northern Sweden. Originally it was a smaller settlement by Öjebyn church, but after being destroyed in a fire it was moved to its current location on Häggholmen in 1668. The 17th century city plan still characterizes parts of the city.
        The only big sight in the area is Öjeby Kyrkstad, a traditional ‘church town’ just to the northwest of Piteå. The white stone-built church here sits among streets of coppery-brown cottages that once housed pilgrims visiting from rural villages.
