    As a consequence of the growth of Mount Isa as a mining and population centre, an Order in Council dated 15 December 1962 established the Shire of Mount Isa, effective from 1 July 1963. Mount Isa was declared a city on 1 June 1968, and the Mount Isa Shire Council became the Mount Isa City Council.
