It's no surprise that many local and international tourists have Kuching, Sarawak in their travel wish lists— it's the most populated city of the biggest state in Malaysia. Home to an abundance of historical sights and dense rainforests, there's so much to do here!

The two "cats": In Bahasa Malaysia 'Kucing' means cat, from which the City got its name, is the mascot of Kuching City. The hornbill in the middle of the logo is the official emblem for the state of Sarawak. The nine pointed Star on top of the Hornbill represents the nine* divisions of Sarawak.

The name of the city, Kuching, is thought to be derived from the Malay word kucing, meaning cat. Many of the locals refer to Kuching as the "Cat City" but it more likely comes from the Chinese word for port ("cochin") coupled with the Malay name mata kucing (cat's-eye) for the longan fruit, a popular trade item.

Some believe that when the first Rajah of Sarawak, an Englishman named James Brooke, arrived in Kuching around 1839, he pointed to the settlement and asked what it was called. A local, mistakenly thinking he was pointing at a passing cat, told him it was called 'Kucing'.
