    Karaganda, also known as Qaraghandy or Karagandy, ( Kazakh: Қарағанды/Qarağandy, pronounced [qɑɾɑˈʁɑndə] ⓘ; Russian: Караганда, pronounced [kərəɡɐnˈda]) is the capital of Karaganda Region in the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is the fifth most populous city in Kazakhstan, behind Almaty (Alma-Ata), Astana, Shymkent and Aktobe.

    By 1939 Karaganda population had swollen to 166,000. Forced labor was extensively used in Karaganda development. Karaganda city importance increased during World War II, when the Germans occupied Donets basin and Parkhomenko coalmining machinery works was among those evacuated to Karaganda.
    They built up the city, worked in the mines and on agricultural projects. Karaganda became the third largest producer of coal in the USSR. After the Soviet Union most mines closed down and were replaced by steel factories. Although most people returned to where they once came from, Karaganda remains a multicultural city.
    When Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, Karaganda Oblast retained its post-1988 boundaries. The last change the region saw was in 1998 when Jezkazgan (Dzhezkazgan) Oblast was liquidated and re-merged with Karaganda oblast, thus making it the largest region of Kazakhstan in terms of area once again.
