      Joseph Hawley (1603โ€“1690), may have been born in Parwich, Derbyshire, England, [citation needed] was the first of the Hawley name to come to America in 1629. He settled at Stratford, Connecticut, by 1650, becoming the town's first town clerk or record keeper, tavern (ordinary) keeper and a shipbuilder.
      At a meeting with the Governor of Connecticut and Council of Safety on August 16, 1776, it was voted to draw an order in favor of Captain David Hawley for 180 pounds to enable Hawley to raise a crew of seamen for the naval service of the United States on the Lakes to the northward, to which he was appointed Captain.

      Hawley served in the Federal army with distinction throughout the Civil War, rising from the rank of captain to that of brevet major general of volunteers. In April 1861, Hawley helped recruit and organize an infantry company. He was mustered into the three-month 1st Connecticut Infantry with the rank of captain of Company A on April 22.
      Hawley soon became a leading figure in the legal, civic, political and military affairs of western Massachusetts. Hawley held many important positions in the Town of Northampton, including Town Clerk (1751-1760), and for many years, Town selectman from 1747 and moderator of Town meetings from 1759.
