    The Interoceanic Highway or Trans-oceanic highway is an international, transcontinental highway in Peru and Brazil that connects the two countries. It was completed in 2011, and runs east to west, spanning 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi). It entailed the renovation and construction of roughly 2,600 kilometers of roads and 22 bridges.
    Such is the impact of the Interoceanic Highway, a route some 5,500 kilometres long that cuts clear across South America. The highway is just one strand in a web of roads that now criss-cross the Amazon. So far, most have encroached on forest around the edges of the basin, but they are increasingly slicing through the middle.
    The idea was conceived of constructing a road to connect the Puerto Maldonado capital of Madre de Dios with the highlands. Almost a decade later, Peru and Brazil signed an agreement to construct the Interoceanic Highway to connect both countries.
