The Indonesian invasion of East Timor, known in Indonesia as Operation Lotus (Indonesian: Operasi Seroja), began on 7 December 1975 when the Indonesian military (ABRI/TNI) invaded East Timor under the pretext of anti-colonialism and anti-communism to overthrow the Fretilin regime that had emerged in 1974.
Nine days later, on 7 December 1975, Indonesia invaded East Timor. Throughout its occupation of East Timor, the Indonesian Government contributed to East Timorese roads, healthcare and education, but this good work was overshadowed by the destruction of property and crops, and the displacement and deaths of civilians.

By April 1976 Indonesia had some 35,000 soldiers in East Timor, with another 10,000 standing by in Indonesian West Timor. A large proportion of these troops were from Indonesia's elite commands. By the end of the year, 10,000 troops occupied Dili and another 20,000 had been deployed throughout East Timor.
On December 10, a second invasion force captured the second largest city, Baucau. Elsewhere, East Timorese resistance continued, but by 1978 the annexation of East Timor by Indonesia was essentially complete. During the initial years of the Indonesian invasion and occupation, more than 100,000 East Timorese died as a direct result of the conflict.
Over the course of 1998 and 1999, the Asian Financial Crisis combined with the fall of the Indonesian dictator, Suharto, to weaken the Indonesian commitment to retaining East Timor. The fact that two prominent East Timorese had previously received the Nobel Peace Prize for their campaign gave the resistance greater legitimacy.
