    It is spoken mainly in Georgia, where it is the official language. In 2016 there were about 3.4 million speakers of Georgian in Georgian. There are Georgian speakers in a number of other countries, including the Russian Federation (171,000), Turkey (151,000), Iran (64,100) and Azerbaijan (30,000).
    Georgian belongs to the Southern branch of the Caucasian family of languages. Its closest relations are Svan and Megrelian, which are spoken primarily in Northwest Georgia. Georgian possesses a number of dialects but is most commonly grouped into either Eastern or Western dialects. Standard Georgian is based on Eastern dialects.
    Its speakers today amount to approximately 3.76 million. Georgian is written in its own unique alphabet. No claimed genetic links between the Kartvelian languages and any other language family in the world are accepted in mainstream linguistics.
