Portugal, in Europe’s southwest corner, is part of the Iberian Peninsula. The country is made up of the mainland and the Azores and Madeira Islands. On the north and east, Portugal is bordered by Spain; on the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The main natural regions of Portugal are western extensions of what lies over the border in Spain. Thus, the mountains of the Minho in the north are extensions of those in Galicia. Trás-os-Montes in the north east is an extension of the Spanish meseta (plateau). As is Beira Alta , Estremadura, Alto Alentejo , Baixo Alentejo and the Algarve, too.
Portugal is geographically positioned in the Northern and Western hemispheres of the Earth. Situated in the westernmost part of Europe, Portugal is bordered by Spain in the north and east; and by Atlantic Ocean in the south and west. The small archipelagos of Azores and Madeira are in the south and southwest of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean.
In addition to continental Europe, Portugal consists of two Autonomous Regions in the Atlantic Ocean, consisting of the archipelagos of Madeira and Azores. Madeira is located on the African Tectonic Plate, and comprises the main island of Madeira, Porto Santo and the smaller Savage Islands.
