    Fujian is located on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait as the closest geographically and culturally to Taiwan. Certain islands such as Kinmen are only approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) east of Xiamen in Fujian. While its population is predominantly identify Han ethnicity, it is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse provinces in China.

    The capital is Fuzhou. Most of Fujian is administered by the People's Republic of China. However some Fujian areas like Kinmen (also called Quemoy) and Matsu are under the control of the Republic of China. The PRC however, still claim that Kinmen and Matsu to be part of Fujian Province of the PRC.
    Fujian has been a large source of Chinese migrants, and many overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, as well as the vast majority of Taiwanese trace their ancestry to Fujian. In fact, Taiwan was once administered as part of Fujian province before being split off to form a separate province by the Qing government in 1887.
