Francisco de Montejo y León ( Spanish pronunciation: [fɾanˈθisko ðe monˈtexoj leˈon]; 1508 – 8 February 1565), known as " the Younger " ( el Mozo ), was a Spanish conquistador, who in 1542 founded the city of Mérida, capital of State of Yucatán, Mexico.
Born in Salamanca, Montejo came to America in about 1514 and served as a conquistador under Pedro Arias de Ávila, Diego de Velásquez, and Juan de Grijalva (in 1518) before joining Cortés as one of the latter's most important lieutenants.
He served in Cuba under Diego Velásquez, later commanded a vessel in the expedition of Juan de Grijalva, and joined Hernán Cortés in the conquest of Mexico. Montejo was commissioned to conquer the Maya of Yucatán, but failed in his attempt (1527–28) to take the peninsula from the east.
