The national park is located in southwestern Utah about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of and 1,000 feet (300 m) higher than Zion National Park. The weather in Bryce Canyon is, therefore, cooler, and the park receives more precipitation: a total of 15 to 18 inches (380 to 460 mm) per year.
Among the nation’s most beloved (and photographed) parks, Bryce is a major draw for hiking, challenging rock climbing, and winter cross-country skiing trails. And the park is less than 40 miles as the crow flies from another natural gem: Zion National Park. Perhaps nowhere are the forces of natural erosion more tangible than at Bryce Canyon.
In fact, the unique topography of Bryce Canyon lures more than 2.5 million people on an annual basis. That's enough to rank it in the top 15 most visited national parks in the entire country.
The Bryce Canyon area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s and was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who homesteaded in the area in 1874. The area around Bryce Canyon was originally designated as a national monument by President Warren G. Harding in 1923 and was redesignated as a national park by Congress in 1928.
