    The term base-ball can be dated to 1744, in John Newbery ’s children’s book A Little Pretty Pocket-Book. The book has a brief poem and an illustration depicting a game called “base-ball.” Interestingly, the bases in the illustration are marked by posts instead of the bags and flat home plate now familiar in the game.
    An extensive minor league baseball system covers most mid-sized cities in the United States. Minor league baseball teams are organized in a six-tier hierarchy, in which the highest teams (AAA) are in major cities that do not have a major league team but often have a major team in another sport, and each level occupies progressively smaller cities.
    The word "baseball" first appeared in a dictionary in 1768, in A General Dictionary of the English Language compiled by the editors of the Encyclopædia Britannica (first published the same year), with the unhelpful definition "A rural game in which the person striking the ball must run to his base or goal."
    That baseball is based on older English games such as stool-ball, trap-ball and tip-cat with possible influences from cricket is difficult to dispute. On the other hand, baseball as played in the New World has many elements that are uniquely American.
