Alexander Spotswood, (born 1676, Tangier, Morocco—died June 7, 1740, Annapolis, Md.), one of the first British colonial governors of North America to appreciate the economic value of the Western frontier.
Alexander Spotswood (1676–1740), lieutenant governor of Virginia (1710–22), had a keen interest in exploration and land speculation which inspired him to lead an expedition westward in 1716. He hoped that English settlements west of the Blue Ridge would prevent the French and Indians from expanding into the Valley of Virginia.
Alexander Spotswood was born in Tangier, a city on the African shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, in 1676.
Spotswood named George the higher of the two in honour of the king, and his companions named the other Alexander in his honour. They descended from the ridge towards the Shenandoah Valley: the first Westerners to set eyes and foot on it.
