      Albi cathedral is a very imposing cathedral in the heart of the historic centre of Albi, a town to the north-east of Toulouse. It is listed as a UNESCO heritage site, and of the most interesting French cathedrals.
      Another remarkable highlight in Albi cathedral is the rood-screen (the screen between the nave and the choir section). This is 18 metres long, eight metres high and in the flamboyant gothic style and as with all screens of this type it is overlooked by an image of Christ.
      They cover nearly 200,000 square feet, and depict religious and historical scenes, as well as geometric optical illusions. First completed in about the 4th century, the Albi cathedral didn’t last long. The original cathedral was burnt down in 666, an ironic year given its holy purpose.
      Criterion (v): The Albi urban site developed gradually over the centuries, and notably from the Middle Ages. The events of the Albigensian Crusade transformed it into a symbolic Episcopal city structured around its Cathedral and its Episcopal fortress-palace.
