Visiting Tetouan For old building lovers, stopping Tetouan is worth it just to see the mix of Moroccan and Andalucían architecture. The medina of Tetouan is distinct to the one in Tangier because it is much less visited by tourists.

Situated next to Marrakech's world-famous square, Jemaa el-Fna, Souk Semmarine is Morocco's most expansive market – a visually compelling labyrinth where traders have been hawking their services and peddling their wares for well over a thousand years.

Morocco's souks (markets) are colourful, chaotic and incredibly exotic, with the aroma of spices and baking bread mixed with the pungent smells of centuries-old tanneries, while donkeys bray and merchants call out in some half-dozen languages.

In the 16th century Tétouan was populated by Moorish Andalusian refugees. Spanish troops captured it in 1860—with an army commanded by Leopoldo O'Donnell, duque de Tetuán—and again in 1913. The city became the capital of Spanish Morocco, and Francisco Franco made it his headquarters. In 1956 it was returned to Morocco.
