An unprecedented wave of violence has overtaken the streets of Zacatecas, where according to security experts, four drug cartels are fighting to control territory: Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Sinaloa Cartel, Los Zetas and the Gulf cartel, along with local gangs.
A study by the Drug Program at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) showed how, in 2020, at least six cartels had an active presence in the state of Zacatecas: from large organizations – such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Sinaloa Cartel and the Northeast Cartel – to smaller criminal cells.
The tactic is often used by gangs to intimidate rivals. Zacatecas, once dominated by the old Zetas cartel, is being fought over by a dizzying number of cartels. Those jockeying for turf in Zacatecas include the Sinaloa, Jalisco, Gulf and Northeast cartels as well as remnants of the Zetas. The state has seen an increase in violence this year.
While the CJNG and its rival, the Sinaloa Cartel, are the strongest groups in the state, the Gulf Cartel (Cartel del Golfo – CDG) and two Zetas splinter groups, the Old School Zetas (Zetas Vieja Escuela) and the Talibanes are also present, according to Zacatecas’ then-secretary of public security in February 2020.
