Don Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (4 July 1807 – 18 January 1890) was a Californio general, statesman, and public figure. He was born a subject of Spain, performed his military duties as an officer of the Republic of Mexico, and shaped the transition of Alta California from a territory of Mexico to the U.S. state of California.
Mariano Vallejo was born on July 4, 1808, in the coastal town of Monterey, the capital of the territory of California, at that time a distant outpost of the Spanish colony of New Spain (Mexico). His father was a government administrator and an engineer who never rose to a high position in the town of three hundred people. His son would do better.
Because of his successes, in 1835 Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was made military commander and director of the settlement of the northern frontier. He established the Pueblo of Sonoma that year, and a military presidio to guard the northernmost reaches of Mexican territory.
General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo died on January 18, 1890 at the age of 82. In 2017 the town of Sonoma, where Vallejo spent so many years and left such a mark, dedicated a statue in his honor. Among those who spoke at the statue’s dedication was Martha Vallejo McGettigan, great-great granddaughter of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.
