    Keelung (基隆 or Jilong) is a port city on the northeast coast of Taiwan. It is a popular cruise ship terminal, and many Taipei-bound goods enter Taiwan here. Only 45 minutes from Taipei City by train, Keelung is within easy day-tripping distance and considered part of the Greater Taipei Region.
    Taihoku Prefecture (臺北州; Taihoku-shū) was an administrative division of Taiwan created in 1920, during Japanese rule. The prefecture consisted of modern-day Keelung, New Taipei City, Taipei and Yilan County. Its government office, which is now occupied by the Control Yuan of Taiwan, was in Taihoku City (modern-day Taipei).
    During the Japanese era, the city was known as Kirun first as a town of Taihoku Prefecture, then became a district in 1920 and finally a city in 1924. After World War II in 1945, the Republic of China, which overthrew the Qing empire, reestablished Keelung as a provincial city of Taiwan Province, which would later become streamlined from 1998.
