The effectiveness of the Ramsar network. Our results provide evidence of the importance of Ramsar network for waterbird populations wintering in the Mediterranean region. Ramsar-designated sites (i.e., only 6.8% of the IWC sites included here) support 43% of the waterbirds counted in the past two decades.
