Dnipro, a city with over a million inhabitants in the east of the country, was popularly known as “the Jewish capital of Ukraine”. Founded in the eighteenth century as Katerynoslav, Dnipro was home to around 80,000 Jews before the Second World War – about a tenth of the city's population.
